Youth Alcohol Abuse, The Correlation Between Hazardous Drinking And Coping Skills, And The Need For Coping Skills Education

Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics show that alcohol abuse among teens is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? More than a few alcohol abuse consultants state that liquor, wine, and beer advertisements brought into being by the media are a key reason for the rise in teen alcohol abuse.

Other alcohol addiction consultants think that the increase in youth alcohol abuse is due to the acceptability and ease of access of alcohol. Still other alcohol addiction experts claim that more than a few of our teenagers engage in injurious drinking because of the increased apprehension that they experience.

From a slightly different viewpoint, due to the fact that both parents in quite a few families are gainfully employed, the lack of parental supervision indubitably has to play a key role in the increase in adolescent alcohol abuse. And lastly, different alcohol addiction experts claim that the escalation of teenage alcohol abuse is due, in some way, to our permissive society.

One feature of teenage alcohol abuse that seems to be under reported in the alcohol abuse research literature, in contrast, is the absence of educational courses that teach students how to augment their coping skills so that their abusive and hazardous drinking behavior is substantially lessened or eliminated. Stated differently, scientific research has revealed that there is an indirect connection between poor coping skills and alcohol abuse.

In effect, this means that the poorer the coping skills, the higher the rate of alcohol abuse. To the extent that this is a correct affirmation, why isn't coping skills training a major part of the academic prospectus in all of our elementary schools, junior high schools, and high schools?

Let us create a scenario for the purpose of clarification. Let us imagine a society in which students are trained how to achieve excellent coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including their senior year in high school. In such a society, when life gets challenging, people who are "coping skills masters" will be able to respond in a healthier and more creative manner, as opposed to others who fail to execute their coping skills.

More specifically, students who show evidence of sound coping skills will be more able to think clearly and display first-class decision making as opposed to teens lack good coping skills, resort to the "quick fix" of abusive and excessive drinking.

What would happen in the above "ideal" society, what's more, if students not only got top quality coping skills training but also got a first-rate education that focused on the long term and short term destructive outcomes associated with drug abuse and alcohol abuse? Emphasizing these types of teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more advanced coping skills training, it is advocated, would help students avoid the noticeable charm correlated with adolescent drinking and, as a result, would notably decrease the abusive drinking behavior displayed by teenagers in our country.

There are certainly scores of compelling reasons why so many of our adolescents abuse alcohol. Such a knotty problem demands a thorough and more applicable response by our educators, politicians, parents, and students so that our teenagers can learn how to cope with life's predicaments in a more productive and accountable way instead of resorting to unhealthy drinking to solve their difficulties.
