A Young Gentleman Needs Therapy For His Acute Depression, Relationship Problems, And For His Alcoholism And Drug Addiction

Roughly three months ago I had lunch with a thirty-five-year-old man named Benjamin who suffers from acute depression, has relationship issues, and who is dependent on alcohol and drugs. As explained by Benjamin, it is his alcoholism and drug addiction and his extreme depression that has had the most to do with his recurring relationship problems.

As articulated by Benjamin, he is so overwhelmed by his relationship problems and by both of his medical conditions that he in essence has little or no reason to accomplish much of anything. What is especially sad about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin completed three semesters of grad school in Spanish literature.

Benjamin's condition makes me question if he is an illustration of an individual who can look in the mirror and perceive his substance abuse and drinking problems and do something positive about these problems. Or, to the contrary, if he a person who has to hit the bottom of the barrel before he gets drug and alcohol addiction rehabilitation that results in lasting recovery.

It may be asked how rehabilitation would help his alcohol and drug addiction. For starters, there are quite a few recently produced physician-prescribed meds that can help Benjamin through the alcohol and drug detoxification process, through his withdrawal symptoms, and help him avoid a drug or an alcohol relapse. Second, in rehabilitation he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the various stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to acknowledge the fact that there is completely nothing helpful about drug addiction and careless and abusive drinking. In a similar way, he would also learn that messing around with one or both of these unhealthy situations is the path to poor work and school performance, a premature death, financial difficulties, deteriorating health, shattered relationships, and legal problems. Fourth, counseling for his depression and for his relationship difficulties might help him cope with these psychological issues more successfully and possibly create less of a need for him to engage in additive behavior. And finally, in counseling he could also learn more about the various symptoms of alcoholism that he has displayed.

Since Benjamin lacks the resolve to carry out much of anything in his life, it is clear that he definitely needs a little hope for a healthier life. And the sad thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the point in life to get the counseling he requires for his acute depression and drug addiction and alcoholism and continue with his treatment program.

Benjamin is simply too young to be beaten in life. He doesn't understand this at the moment but if he can learn how to abstain from drugs and alcohol through alcohol and drug rehabilitation and get the treatment he needs for his severe depression, he can turn his life around and start living with direction, self-respect, and passion.

More solid relationships, a wonderful life, self esteem, and beneficial change are clearly a reality for Benjamin. But only if he can get motivated to get the medical rehab he requires, follow through with his therapy program, live his life in an alcohol and drug-free and healthy way, and learn how to acquire a more positive attitude about life.
